Children's children are the crown of old men...
Proverbs 17:6

And we have a crown full of jewels!

It's summer time at Fisher Texels!
The temperature has been hanging around 95'ish since July started. Things are getting dry and we could use some rain, but without the lightening that usually accompanies it at this time of year.

We went to the National Texel Show and Sale in June.  The first of July we weaned our lambs.  And mid-July, we scanned the lambs to measure their loin eye area (that's were the lamb chops come from) and backfat.  July has been busy to say the least.

While at the National show, we learned why Texel sheep have all that lovely muscling without being tough to eat.  It is do to the fact that Texel sheep are the only breed of sheep to have a gene (and usually 2 copies) called the Myostatin Gene.

This gene is truely unique to Texel sheep, and when using Texel rams as a terminal sire, 1 copy will be passed onto their offspring.  Thus, these lambs will display added muscling, which means more pounds per lamb at weaning.
